The day of my first post I was feeling good, eating my salad and banana for lunch and then alas – I opened up my drawer at work and there they were – the chocolates a coworker’s wife brought back from Germany…. Luckily not many were left from the previous week but I couldn’t be satisfied with just one. I wasn’t satisfied until they were all gone. All together they didn’t make up a normal candy bar that are we are tempted with each time we walk up to the checkout counter at the grocery store. But nonetheless, they just kept calling out my name and I took advantage of that… I have noticed little changes such as I didn’t eat that second corn on the cob last night. Every little change is a step in the right direction.
I awoke at 3:45 am feeling awful. Stomach not feeling well, bloated, gassy, and the image of myself standing in the kitchen at 11:00 pm, filling my face with leftover Chinese food just before going into bed was all I could see in my mind’s eye while staring at the clock next to the bed. I thought – This is it! Literally my wake up call! I can’t keep doing things like this. I can’t keep doing this to my body, my knees, legs, etc., etc., and overall, my health. To quote Lao-tzu, Chinese philosopher (604 BC-531 BC): A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Today I am taking my first step…and another…and another….
I made the choice to bring a more healthy lunch to work than usual. Instead of putting in the leftover Chinese food, I made a salad with chopped egg, mushroom, onions on it, brought a banana and black cherry yogurt. Had my oatmeal with brown sugar and oatmeal this morning as we always do (note to self – omit the brown sugar). Have my coffee. Now to think about a healthy supper.
This blog will serve as my diary of sorts and will accompany me through the ups and downs on my journey to a healthier me!
